Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said Friday that it is a national disgrace for a country’s armed forces to use weapons against their own people. This statement was made by the Singaporean Foreign Minister when he asked Myanmar’s military rulers to find a peaceful solution to the unrest in that country.

“This is the height of national shame for the armed forces of any country to use weapons against its own people,” said Vivian Balakrishnan. He also repeated that Singapore was shocked by the incidents of violence against civilians in Myanmar.

The United Nations (UN) says at least 54 people have died since the military coup that took place in Myanmar on February 1. In addition, more than 1,700 people have been detained, including 29 journalists.

Balakrishnan and his fellow foreign ministers in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held talks with representatives of Myanmar’s junta earlier this week.

Singapore along with a number of other ASEAN foreign ministers have called for the release of political prisoners including Myanmar civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Balakrishnan said on Friday that the (ASEAN) foreign ministers communicate daily with each other to discuss issues regarding Myanmar.(henri/pn)
